Character Info[]
While Yoshi is the name of the species, there have also been a few notable Yoshis names Yoshi over the years. One such Yoshi was a part of a team of Yoshis who helped to rescue Baby Mario from Kamek and deliver the baby to its parents. When Mario grew up, he encountered another Yoshi who would become a close friend and not only help Mario out when fighting Bowser, but would even join him on go kart races, tennis matches, and golfing. Which Yoshi is this Yoshi? The world may never know…
General Information[]
Entrance[]
A Yoshi Egg sits on screen shaking in place as a crack forms at its top before the egg breaks apart and Yoshi hops out.
Kirby Hat[]
Kirby will wear a hat that looks suspiciously like Yoshi’s head on his head.
Taunts[]
Up Taunt: Yoshi will do a fun little dance as he twirls around in place and chants out, “Yoshi!” as he finishes.
Down Taunt: Facing the camera, Yoshi will excitedly hop up and down twice as he waves his arms in the air saying, “Yoshi Yoshi!”
Side Taunt: Yoshi will spin around as he chases his tail with glee. After spinning around twice Yoshi will glance towards the screen and wave a hand in the air.
Victory Poses[]
- Yoshi will start off by flutter jumping in the air. After he lands he’ll quickly spin around himself before holding up a Victory sign with one of his hands.
- Yoshi will throw a quick couple punches in the air, spin, and then pose balancing on one foot similar to his character selection animation in the original Super Smash Bros.
- Yoshi will look over to his left and right as if he were searching for something he’d lost. Following this Baby Mario will appear poking out from behind Yoshi’s head as Yoshi looks both elated and relieved.
Moveset[]
Standard Special[]
Egg Lay: Yoshi will stick out his tongue with speed and attempt to latch onto an opponent. If he does, a small amount of damage will be dealt as Yoshi pulls the opponent into his mouth before ejecting them out behind him trapped inside of a Yoshi egg. Opponents are trapped within these eggs for a short time, which is longer based on how much damage they’ve already taken. Button mashing is the key to escape, but until they have they’re a sitting duck for further attacks. This attack can also be used to grab Food-based items from farther away that Yoshi can eat for healing.
Side Special[]
Egg Roll: Yoshi will encase himself inside of a Yoshi egg and roll forwards with great speed. Yoshi can jump once while rolling and deals more damage based on how much momentum he’s built up with this attack. This move can move past shielding opponents and players can tilt the control stick to send Yoshi back in the opposite direction. Once Yoshi hits an opponent he’ll be broken out of the egg as the opponent is damaged and launched.
Up Special[]
Egg Throw: Yoshi will hop a small amount before rearing back and throwing an egg forwards in an arc. This arc can be influenced by tilting the control stick forwards or back. Tilting the stick forwards causes the egg to be thrown farther, but lower in the air and tilting the stick backwards causes the egg to be thrown shorter, but higher up into the air. These mechanics are retained when used in the air, however Yoshi also gets an increased boost to the jump he performs increasing his verticality. This can be done up to three times in the air, a fourth use of this move will not allow Yoshi to rise any higher into the air. This egg can bounce along the ground a single time and will break apart if it hits the ground a second time or anything else.
Down Special[]
Yoshi Bomb: This move is a Ground Pound technique that has Yoshi fall straight down (or jump up slightly first if used on the ground) and slam his rear into anyone below him. This move is performed pretty quickly and if the input is held Yoshi can pass through soft platforms to hit opponents below. This move is also effective at damaging opponent’s shields with the grounded version being even stronger against them.
Final Smash[]
Stampede!: This Final Smash starts out with Yoshi running straight forwards and if he can reach an opponent he’ll headbutt them up above the screen as the Final Smash transitions into a cinematic. The fighter will next be seen on some sort of rocky gorge as the camera pans back to reveal a stampede of various colored Yoshis running right for them. The player Yoshi is at the front leading the charge as the Yoshi Stampede tramples over the opponent before they are sent flying away at the end.
Extra Skill[]
Star Children: When this Extra Skill is activated one of the five Star Children from Yoshi’s Island DS will appear on Yoshi’s back granting him a stat boost as well as applying some form of new effect to Yoshi’s Egg Throw special. These Babies appear in the order of Baby Mario - Baby Peach - Baby DK - Baby Wario - Baby Bowser. By holding down the Extra Skill input a wheel of options will appear above Yoshi’s head allowing the player to use the control stick to select which Baby they’d like to have. Each baby can take 10% damage while on Yoshi’s back and if that value is reached they will disappear and will be unavailable until Yoshi’s next stock. Yoshi can swap babies however they will each retain their own individual health values. The effects of each baby are as follows:
- Baby Mario - Yoshi’s Speed stat will be increased which includes his running speed and movement in the air. Additionally, when Egg Throw is used the egg can now bounce up to three times, even off of walls, and moves faster.
- Baby Peach - Yoshi’s Jump stat will be increased which includes both the jump height and falling speed for all forms of jumping except for short hops. Additionally, when Egg Throw is used the egg can no longer bounce and when it breaks it will deal less damage than usual. Instead the egg will release a wind effect which can push nearby opponents and objects away from where the egg landed.
- Baby DK - Yoshi’s Attack stat will be increased which boosts his damage for all non-Special move and non-item attacks. Additionally, when Egg throw is used the egg can no longer bounce and when it breaks it will burst in a small aoe explosion dealing extra damage, but less knockback.
- Baby Wario - Yoshi’s Arms stat will be increased which boosts the damage from any item-based attacks Yoshi performs, the amount healed from items, the time duration-based items last, and makes him less likely to drop items when attacked. Additionally, when Egg Throw is used eggs will deal more damage to an opponent who is either holding an item or under the effect of one.
- Baby Bowser - Yoshi’s Defense stat will be increased making it more difficult for Yoshi to be launched as well as makes his shield harder to break. Additionally, when Egg Throw is used Yoshi won’t throw an egg at all. Instead, Baby Bowser will spit out a fireball which travels in a straight line. These fireballs travel about a third through Final Destination and there can only be one on screen at a time.
Unique Traits[]
Yoshi is capable of crawling against the stage. When he jumps in the air Yoshi can also utilize his flutter jump technique which allows him to hang in the air for just a couple moments longer. Yoshi is also immune to being shield stabbed. This is because when Yoshi uses his shield he actually hides being a Yoshi Egg instead. The Yoshi Egg gets darker instead of shrinking like normal shields.
