Stage Info[]
The Great Cave Offensive is actually a sub-game mode inside of Kirby Super Star (and Kirby Super Star Ultra). In this mode Kirby falls through a hole and lands inside of an expansive cave which he needs to find a way out of. This cave is divided into four sections each with their own boss and bounty of treasures. Collecting these treasures is the main objective of this mode and collecting them rewards Kirby with an amount of gold.
Stage Layout[]
The Great Cave Offensive is the largest stage in Smash Bros. to date with only one even coming close, Palutena’s Temple. Unlike Palutena’s Temple which is very open, The Great Cave Offensive feels much more like an enclosed space. There are areas where you can be sent past the blast zones on all four sides, they’re in very specific locations. The rest of the stage is one gigantic cave of life, or at least it would be if it weren’t for the lava. This stage’s large size makes it ideal for 8-Player Smash, which was actually its intended purpose.
Hazards[]
Lava[]
Lava is all over this stage. From the lava flow at the very bottom to all of the patches of lava spread out on the walls and ceilings it’s pretty hard to avoid it. However this isn’t your ordinary lava that you might find on levels like Bowser’s Castle or Norfair that damages you a bit and then knocks you away. These patches of lava are actually Danger Zones. If you make contact with these Danger Zones you’ll take 25% damage. If however you were already at 100% damage or greater when you make contact with the Danger Zone, then instead of receiving damage you will be instantly KO’d. Truly dangerous.
Spikes[]
There are two areas on this stage where you can find a set of four spikes, just below the middle top platform and then in the bottom right corner. These spikes are always out and if you make contact with them you’ll take 10% damage and be knocked away.
Minecarts[]
Occasionally a minecart will spawn either on the small platform on the middle left or on top of the starry platform on the middle right or. If a fighter jumps into the minecart, or if no one enters it after 15 seconds, the minecart will go speeding away. Making contact with it at this point will damage fighters. The minecart on the left will crash just below the spikes on the right, while the minecart on the right will carry fighters past the blast zone in the lower left.
Spinning Cannons[]
There are two spinning cannons on this stage. One in the middle of the lava flow at the bottom and the other on the left between one of the walk offs and a vertical chasm. The cannons don’t spin smoothly and instead transition to pointing in one of the sight cardinal directions. If a fighter enters a cannon they must hit a button to be shot out, but they’ll need to be careful of where they are being fired especially if they are in the cannon at the bottom. You can’t stay in a cannon indefinitely as after a short time you’ll be fired out automatically.
Treasure Chests[]
Treasure Chests can spawn in random locations on the map. Most of these chests contain helpful items, however there is that rare chance that they can explode and damage anyone who is nearby.
