Character Info[]
Hailing from the mystical Sequin Land, Shantae is the guardian Genie (or Half-Genie) of Scuttle Town, which she’s often tasked with saving due to the Mayor’s incompetence. Shantae’s combines her belly-dancing talent with her magical abilities to transform into different animals, shoot fireballs, summon thunderclouds and pike balls, and more. While she loses her genie powers at the end of Risky’s Revenge, she manages to reclaim them at the end of Pirate’s Curse.
General Information[]
Entrance[]
Shantae flips in from the background and lands on the stage (reminiscent of the jump pads in Risky’s Revenge).
Kirby Hat[]
Kirby gains Shantae’s purple ponytail and gold headband.
Taunts[]
Up Taunt: Shantae dramatically holds up a Baby Warp Squid with one hand, which floats in her hand for a brief moment.
Down Taunt: Shantae whips out a potion and takes a gulp; her pose is a bit similar to Young Link’s in Ultimate.
Side Taunt: Shantae pumps herself up by saying “Ret-2-Go!”
Victory Poses[]
- Shantae is seen dancing on the spot while holding a lamp above her head, which sucks in gems of all colours from offscreen.
- Shantae floats off the ground and spins with her arms held out, in a style reminiscent of when she clears a stage.
- Shantae fires off several fireballs before resting a hand on her hip and holding up a finger with a small flame coming off it. Based on this pose from Risky’s Revenge.
Moveset[]
Standard Special[]
Fireball: Pressing B lets Shantae fire off a ball of fire from her hands. Holding the button longer lets her build power to release a Spitfire (a fan of three fireballs). Holding it even longer changes the move to Flamethrower, letting Shantae unleash a stream of fire. Similar to Sephiroth’s Flare ability, the move cannot be stored.
Side Special[]
Storm Puff: Shantae casts a Storm Puff cloud which slowly floats a short distance and lingers a bit before disappearing. If an opponent moves underneath the cloud, they’ll be struck by a lightning bolt. Shantae can use her side special again to manually unleash the bolt at any time, but the damage will be slightly reduced.
Up Special[]
Pirate Cannon: Shantae uses Risky’s cannon to fire a cannonball below her and propel herself into the air. She can fire up to three times to get a boost; the final cannonball carries her the furthest distance and has a meteor effect if used directly above the opponent, similar to Robin’s Elwind. Her outfit briefly changes to include her pirate vest and hat while atop the cannon.
Down Special[]
Transformation Dance: Shantae enters a dancing animation that allows her to transform into various animal forms. However, unlike in her own series where she stays in a different animal form until she transforms back, Smash sees her swapping out her special moves depending on which dance she uses. By performing her up, down, left/right or neutral special during her dancing animation, Shantae will exchange that direction’s regular special move for a transformation special move.
For instance, using the side special during Transformation Dance will change Shantae’s Storm Puff move to the Monkey Bullet move. Performing the move during Transformation Dance again will change it back to Fireball. Perform different animal dances to change up some or all of your specials as you see fit (see Extra Skill section).
Shantae can also cancel her dancing animation with the shield button.
Final Smash[]
Friends to the End: Shantae calls in her friends Sky, Bolo and Rottytops; the trio fly into the screen on Giga Wrench and pass in front of Shantae, similar to Fox’s Arwing final smash from Ultimate. Any opponents who are struck are sent into a cinematic finisher, landing flat on the ground as Shantae and her friends all run in to beat them up, whipping up a large dust cloud with humorous cartoon antics. At the end, the group all pose as the opponent goes flying into the distance behind them.
Extra Skill[]
Animal Abilities: These are the alternate special moves Shantae can use at any time after switching them out during Transformation Dance:
Spider Venom (neutral special) - Shantae transforms into her spider form and spits out a shot of venom before changing back. Hitting an opponent causes a poison effect that lasts a few seconds.
Monkey Bullet (side special) - Shantae turns into her monkey form and launches herself horizontally at high speed, knocking opponents into the air before coming to a stop and instantly changing back to her human form.
Harpy Talon (up special) - Shantae assumes her harpy form and performs a wide swipe with her talons to hit opponents above her. She can use the move repeatedly in mid-air and also perform 3 additional jumps, changing back once she lands on the ground.
Elephant Stomp (down special) - Shantae leaps up and switches to her elephant form, slamming down hard to bury opponents before changing back. Unlike the other animal abilities, the Elephant Stomp cannot be swapped out; using her down special during dancing Transformation Dance will automatically execute the move.
