Boss Info[]
Rayquaza is a super-ancient Pokemon and the Legendary Pokemon which represents the atmosphere. In ancient times the Hoenn region was threatened by Groudon and Kyogre battling it out and they were only quieted by Rayquaza, who overwhelmed their power and made the two back down. When Team Magma and Team Aqua sought to reawaken the ancient Pokemon and return them to their primal forms, Rayquaza was once again called upon by Zinnia and a young Pokemon Trainer. Using the power of the meteorite, Rayquaza achieved its Mega Evolution and once again defeated Groudon and Kyogre and forced the two back into hibernation.
Boss Fight Details[]
Rayquaza is fought on a grounded plane with no additional platforms, as per usual for a boss fight. Unlike Brawl’s Subspace Emissary where Rayquaza was fought next to a lake, this Rayquaza boss fight takes place high up in the upper atmosphere on a platform made of clouds. Rayquaza will start out the fight on the right side of the screen, but through the use of some of its attacks it can end up on the left side or even in the middle.
When fought on the highest difficulty, Rayquaza will Mega Evolve once it reaches 25% of its health. While Mega Evolved, Rayquaza’s attacks become more powerful and it gains access to a new attack, Dragon Ascent.
Attacks[]
Iron Tail[]
Rayquaza’s tail will flash as it's sweeped out across the ground. On higher difficulties Rayquaza will sweep its tail twice back to back.
Dig[]
Rayquaza will slowly fly up into the air and off the screen before diving down towards the player and digging into the ground. After a couple seconds Rayquaza will pop back out of the ground on either the left, right, or center of the stage.
Extreme Speed[]
Rayquaza will duck down and quickly rush from one side of the stage to the other damaging anyone in its path. Rayquaza will stay on that side of the screen for a time.
Fly[]
Rayquaza will fly up into the air before dashing baked and forth near the ground. When Rayquaza is low on health it will perform this attack two or even three times in a row. While shorter characters can attempt to duck beneath Rayquaza, this attack also creates a wind effect which can push characters around.
Energy Ball[]
Rayquaza will charge up a ball of green energy before throwing it either downwards at a diagonal angle or straight forward along the ground. If the ball hits the ground it will explode outwards for an aoe. This attack can be reflected back at Rayquaza, but it cannot be absorbed with moves like Mr. Game & Watch’s Oil Panic or Ness’ PSI Magnet.
Thunderbolt[]
Rayquaza will fly up in a tight circle and attack with a multi-hitting bolt of lightning. This lightning does not deal any knockback and it destroys shields quickly. As Rayquaza rises into the air it can hurt fighters with electricity just on impact. Rayquaza will only use this move on low HP replacing Dig.
Bulldoze[]
Rayquaza will burrow underground. Following this the ground will rumble slightly as Rayquaza bursts back up into the sky aiming for the feet of the fighter. When at lower HP Rayquaza will use this attack up to four times depending on the difficulty.
Dragon Pulse[]
Rayquaza’s eyes will glow purple before it creates an explosion centered on the location of the player. While Rayquaza’s eyes are glowing, if a fighter makes contact with Rayquaza’s head they will be spiked down into the ground.
Roar[]
Rayquaza will let out an eardrum-shattering roar. At the start of the roar fighters who are close to Rayquaza will be pushed back away from it. This Roar does no damage to the fighters and is only used as a keepaway tactic.
Dragon Ascent[]
This attack can only be used while Rayquaza is Mega Evolved. Mega Rayquaza’s body will be covered in a green aura as it ascends up into the sky. After a couple seconds Mega Rayquaza will crash down with all the force of its draconic and atmospheric energy targeting where the player is standing, creating a large blast around its point of impact. This attack is Mega Rayquaza’s most powerful and is capable of killing at low % when fought on the highest difficulty.
