Item Info[]

The Power Glove was an accessory designed for use with the NES that players would wear over their hand. A controller was set on the arm of the glove with all the buttons found on an NES controller as well as buttons for programming set commands. Depending on what mode the Power Glove was in, players could move their hand in different ways such as rotating their arm to the side to drive a car in Rad Racer or swinging your fist up to perform an uppercut in Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! Though the Power Glove was officially licensed by Nintendo, Nintendo had nothing to do with its creation. Critics considered the Power Glove to be impractical as trying to use it to control games was rather difficult. Despite this, the Power Glove is far from being forgotten and has been featured in various media including The Angry Video Game Nerd, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (aka Nightmare on Elm Street 6), Smosh, The Goldbergs, Ash vs Evil Dead, and the Nintendo-produced film, The Wizard.

Item Usage[]

When a fighter picks up the Power Glove they will wear it on their dominant arm. At this point, in order for a fighter to use Power Glove they need to hold down the attack button and then input a series of commands using the Control Pad to activate some kind of effect. Players have a very short amount of time to complete inputting these commands. If they do not input a correct command in the time limit then the Power Glove will break apart and fall off their arm and the character’s alt costume will instantly change as a fun backfiring mechanic. Additionally, after inputting the code the player will need to release the attack button in order for the code to be recognized and activated. Even if a player does input a correct code however, the Power Glove will still fall off their arm as this is a one-use, one-chance item. The different effects, and the codes required to activate them are as follows:

  • Summon Item - By pressing the inputs “Up - Down - Up”, the fighter can summon a new item into their hand! Only items that can be held and swung as a melee weapon such as the Surfboard, Fire Bar, Devil Axe, or Fan.
  • Warp - By pressing the inputs “Left - Up - Right”, the fighter will immediately warp away to another location like magic! By default, the fighter will warp straight up in the air, but by tilting the control stick the fighter is able to warp in any other direction.
  • Jump Again - By pressing the inputs “Down - Down - Left”, the fighter gains the ability to jump an additional time in the air. This works just like other fighters such as Kirby and Ridley who have additional jumps normally. This effect will only last for a short time so use it well.
  • Lifesteal - By pressing the inputs “Right - Down - Right”, the fighter will be able to drain health from their opponents when fighting at close range. Any melee attacks that the fighter lands on an opposing fighter will allow them to heal their damage by 75% of the damage they inflicted. This effect will only last for a short time and will end immediately if the fighter is able to restore 50% of their health with it.
  • Gravity Well - By pressing the inputs “Up - Right - Down - Left”, the fighter will generate a gravitational field around themselves. This gravity well will only affect items that are on the stage and can pull them to your feet if you get close enough to them allowing for easy pickup. This effect will only last for a short time, but it should help you get to that Master Ball before anyone else can!
  • Lava Floor - By pressing the inputs “Left - Left - Right - Up”, fighters will summon a field of lava onto the stage. This lava will cover the entirety of the platform that the fighter was standing on a couple seconds after they finish the input. The lava is damaging to all fighters, including the Power Glove’s user, and will deal damage and knock fighters up into the air on contact. Thankfully the lava doesn’t last forever and will vanish after a short time.
  • Low Gravity - By pressing the inputs “Down - Up - Down - Up”, fighters can lower their own personal gravity. This allows fighters to both jump higher into the air in a single bound, but to also fall more slowly in the air allowing greater air control. This effect will only last for a short time.
  • Impact Run - By pressing the inputs “Right - Up - Up - Right”, fighters can turn their bodies into a weapon! While under this effect, fighters can damage an opponent by merely running into them with their bodies. Fighters do have to cover a short distance though before they are capable of doing this and a special graphic will surround them whenever the ability is charged. This effect will only last for a short time.
  • Uber Beam - By pressing the inputs “Up - Up - Down - Down - Left - Right - Left - Right”, the Power Glove will shake and rattle before it fires out a massive laser! This laser is roughly on par with Robin’s Thoron attack and is a solid beam of energy that stretches all the way across to the other side of the screen. While this laser is a deadly attack it comes at a price. The fighter who uses this will end up taking some damage as backlash, though the amount is considerably less than what the Uber Beam itself deals out on opponents.
