Stage Info[]
While this stage is just called “Pirate Ship” it’s actually the ship that Tetra sails on with her pirate crew. This ship is first seen as it pursues the Helmaroc King after it kidnaps Tetra. After Toon Link stands up to save the day and rescue Tetra, she returns the favor by letting Toon Link aboard her ship and sailing him to the Forsaken Fortress so he can save his sister Aryll. Tetra and her ship appear several other times throughout Toon Link’s journey as they help each other out.
Stage Layout[]
This fight takes place on the pirate ship itself as it sails around the Great Sea. While it’s labeled a “midair” stage, there is no air to fall down through as the bottom of the stage is the sea itself. Falling into this water allows fighters a few seconds to jump out and recover back to the stage; however if they stay in the water for too long they will drown and lose a stock. On top of this, the stage does actually have a slight scroll to it going from left to right. This isn’t immediately obvious if you’re just running around on the ship itself, but fighters who are in the air or the water will notice that they’re character is being pulled towards the right side of the screen. Items that hang in the air such as Bumpers and Party Balls are also affected by this and can be carried offscreen before they see any use. Trying to swim in front of the Pirate Ship isn’t any safer. If a Fighter is in the water and hits the front of the ship they’ll take damage and be immediately KO’d as the ship runs over them.
The ship itself is a large solid platform with a dip in the middle to model after the actual Pirate Ship from Wind Waker. It slants back up on the left side where the bow of the ship is. Above the middle section of the ship are two smaller platforms for the crow’s nest which can be fought on.
A second ship can at times appear on the right side of the screen, Toon Link’s very own King of Red Lions. This ship is considerably smaller than the main Pirate Ship and can be used as a platform. However, the King of Red Lions only sticks around for a short time and if a fighter is still aboard when the ship sails back offscreen they’ll be KO’d.
Occasionally a rocky outcrop will appear on the left side of the screen causing the Pirate Ship to stop sailing as the ship runs up against the rocks and tilts upwards a bit. These rocks can be used as a new platform for fighting and naturally means that the normal scrolling mechanic is in pause for the time being. If a character is caught between the rocks and the ship when this occurs they’ll take some damage, but thankfully they won’t be meteor smashed beneath the waves unless they were in the water when this occurred. Eventually the rocks will sink down beneath the waves so the Pirate Ship can continue its voyage.
Hazards[]
Catapult[]
Near the bow of the ship there is a hidden catapult that spends most of its time flush with the rest of the ship as a surprise for later. At random points this platform will open up and reveal a small catapult. After a few seconds the catapult will swing forwards launching anyone that was on top of it. This catapult does no damage, but it does swing with force and has KO potential if an opponent has been damaged enough. The catapult can even fling some solid items forwards including the Parasol, Soccer Ball, and the Flashlight.
Enemy Outpost[]
Sometimes the Pirate Ship will sail past an Enemy Outpost which can be seen in the background of the stage. When this happens the outpost will launch bombs at the Pirate Ship. Being hit by these bombs is damaging, but the knockback is fairly weak. After a short time the Pirate Ship will sail past the Enemy Outpost and be out of range of the bombs.
Cyclone[]
At times a storm can be seen brewing in the background of the stage before it starts getting closer. Eventually this storm will reach the Pirate Ship and pluck it out of the seas and throw it up into the air. At this point the scrolling mechanic will halt as the stage truly becomes “midair” for a short time. If the King of Red Lions was on the screen when the storm picks up the Pirate Ship, it will be sent flying away along with anyone who was standing on top of it. When the storm is over the ship will fall back down towards the water and during this time the gravity on the stage will be lessened slightly.
