Character Info[]
After losing his mother in a tragic accident, Oliver’s brief lead to him isolating him in grief over her loss. That is until his tears brought a stuffed toy to life which turned out to be Drippy, the Lord High Lord of the Fairies. Drippy recognized the great potential that Oliver held and guided him to find a wand and cast the spell Gateway to leave Motorville and visit the world of Ni no Kuni which was in desperate need of a hero. Though he was initially motivated by the idea to bring his mother back to life, Oliver ended up saving the people of Ni no Kuni from several threats such as the dark djinn Shadar and his ability to break hearts, as well as from the White Witch and her Forbidden Spell.
General Information[]
Entrance[]
A glowing blue omega symbol will be quickly drawn through the air before disappearing. An ornate doorway will appear and open as Oliver steps through, wand in hand. The door will vanish behind Oliver once he’s fully stepped through it.
Kirby Hat[]
Kirby will wear Oliver’s hair on top of his head as well as hold Oliver’s wand, Mornstar, in his right hand.
Taunts[]
Up Taunt: Oliver’s locket will pulse with bright green energy as he says, “Woah, someone here must have a lot of [BLANK]”. The [BLANK] will be substituted for one of the eight emotions in Ni no Kuni; Enthusiasm, Kindness, Courage, Restraint, Belief, Confidence, Love, or Ambition. What emotion Oliver says will be dependent on who he is fighting against. Against Link, Oliver might say Courage. Against Pit, Oliver might say Belief. Against Tiki, Oliver might say Enthusiasm.
Down Taunt: Drippy will appear next to Oliver and say, “Go get ‘em Ollie-boy!”
Side Taunt: Drippy will appear next to Oliver and start swinging his little fists saying, “Let me at ‘em Ollie-boy!”
Victory Poses[]
- Oliver will triumphantly raise his wand high into the air saying “I won!”. Drippy will stand next to Oliver, looking very proud, as he poses with his hands on his hips.
- Oliver will cast the spell Secret Ingredient by drawing out its two lines with glowing blue magic in the air. A comically large food item such as a wedge of cheese, banana flan, or cheeseburger will drop down from the air in front of Oliver. As this occurs Oliver will say, “Neato!”
- Drippy will leap up and give Oliver a great big high five as he says, “Well done Ollie-boy!”
Moveset[]
Standard Special[]
Fireball: Oliver will point his wand forwards and quickly draw the symbol for the Fireball spell, shouting “Fireball!” as he does so. A small ball of flame will burst into existence and fly forth from Oliver’s wand for a medium distance. If this fireball makes contact with an opponent it will inflict medium damage to them, but a small amount of knockback. This is the spell to use when you want to damage opponents.
Side Special[]
Pulse: Oliver will point his wand forwards and quickly draw the symbol for the Pulse spell, shouting “Pulse!” as he does so. A blast of blue, almost electrical-looking energy will appear from Oliver’s wand before flying forwards for a medium distance. If this energy pulse makes contact with an opponent it will inflict a small amount of damage to them, but a medium amount of knockback. This is the spell to use when you want to keep opponents away from Oliver.
Up Special[]
Quicken Growth: Oliver will point his wand down at the ground and quickly draw the symbol for the Quicken Growth spell, saying “Quicken Growth” as he does so. A small plant will burst up from the ground immediately in front of Oliver as it quickly grows high into the air. Oliver will leap onto this plant as it grows so that he can use it to quickly rise up into the air. Once the plant has stopped growing Oliver will leap off of it as the plant withers away.
Down Special[]
Ward: Oliver will point his wand forwards and quickly draw the symbol for the Ward spell, saying “Ward” as he does so. A hexagonal dome of magical energy will surround Oliver creating a passive protective barrier around him for a short time. Ward will grant Oliver resistance to all forms of damage for a short time meaning he takes less damage from each hit. This does not however affect the amount of knockback Oliver takes from an attack. Ward will wear off after only a few seconds and cannot be cast for another 8 seconds.
Final Smash[]
Burning Heart: Oliver’s Wizard’s Companion book will float up in front of him, its pages quickly flipping around as if blown by the wind. Streams of flame will spiral up and around Oliver’s body as he raises his wand high into the sky. The flames will join with Oliver’s wand and create a massive ball of hot swirling fire. Once the fireball is fully formed Oliver will swing back with his wand before swinging it forwards causing the massive fireball to quickly fly through the air. The fireball will burn everything in its path until it makes contact with an opponent. That opponent will be pulled into the middle of the fireball before it explodes out into a swirling column of fire that traps and damages all other fighters who were above or below the fireball for a couple seconds. The fires will swirl around and damage the opponents multiple times before one last flare bursts out from the fire dealing one final hit to Oliver’s foes before they are launched back and away from Oliver.
Extra Skill[]
Familiar Swap: Oliver’s Extra Skill is what allows him to freely swap between his Familiars. The order the Familiars are swapped in is static. The Mite will be swapped out for the Seed Sprite. The Seed Sprite will be swapped out for the Shonky-Honker. The Shonky-Honker will be swapped out for the Mite. To help facilitate gameplay, this process comes out quick and smooth allowing minimal downtime for Oliver.
Unique Traits[]
During the fight Oliver will always be joined by one of three familiars; the Mite, the Seed Sprite, or the Shonky-Honker. The vast majority of Oliver’s normal attacks (including tilts, grabs, aerials, and smashes) will be performed by his familiar instead of by Oliver himself. Each familiar attacks with different animations and hitboxes and Oliver will need to rotate between them using his Extra Skill as the fight goes on. Each Familiar will run on a 20 second timer and if that time elapses then they will become lethargic. This will result in that Familiar attacking slower and for less damage. Swapping Familiars regularly is key to being able to use Oliver effectively. Mite will primarily use strong physical attacks with its sword, Seed Sprite will attack with magical strikes, and the Shonky-Honker sits in the middle with a mix of physical and magical attacks. These Familiars cannot take damage and will always remain by Oliver’s side. By default, the Mite will be Oliver’s starting Familiar in each battle. However by holding specific buttons when selecting Oliver from the character select screen you are able to change it so that he starts out the fight with the Seed Sprite or Shonky-Honker.
