Stage Info[]

Norfair is a system of lava-filled caverns and tunnels located beneath the planet Zebes, and directly below Brinstar which makes Norfair the deepest area of the Space Pirate fortress on Zebes. The heat in Norfair is so intense that Samus was initially unable to traverse through most of the region until she was able to upgrade her Power Suit into the Varia Suit. Even then she was still at risk of dying with all the lava around until she obtained the Gravity Suit.

Stage Layout[]

Norfair consists of five small platforms arranged in a V formation. One platform sits in the bottom row in the center of the screen which is slightly longer than each of the other platforms. Above this platform are four more which fan out from the main platform with each of their edges above the furthest edge of the platform below them.

Hazards[]

Rising Magma:[]

As the fight rages, magma may rise up from the bottom of the stage similar to the acid in Planet Zebes and Brinstar. The magma can rise to three different levels and will inflict strong fire damage and upwards knockback to any fighter that makes contact with it. The magma can rise to either being just a short distance below the bottom platform, in between the bottom platform and the middle row, and in between the middle row and top row of platforms.

Side Magma:[]

A wall of magma can also rain down from either the left or right side of the screen. This magma will cover roughly half of the stage and similarly to the rising magma will deal fire damage and sideways knockback to any fighter that makes contact with it.

Magma Wave:[]

If you see a tall wave of magma begin to rise up in the background of the stage, it’s time to watch out as that wave is going to be hitting the entire stage very soon. Luckily for the fighters a safety hatch will appear on the stage with blue doors on both its left and right sides. Attacking these doors will cause them to open and allow any fighters inside the hatch where they can ride out the lava wave safely. Relatively safe, that is as fighters can continue to attack and damage each other while in the hatch, they just won’t be hurt by the lava. At a certain point the doors of the hatch will close and effectively trap the fighters inside of it. If a fighter isn’t able to get into the hatch, their best option remaining is to dodge at just the right time to avoid the lava, otherwise they’ll take a high amount of damage and knockback. Once the lava has passed the safety hatch will open up and the fighters inside of it can leave.
