Character Info[]
Silk suit, top hat, gilded cane…the inimitable Mr. Monopoly, a.k.a. “Rich Uncle” Milburn Pennybags, is as sharp-dressed as they come and always on the lookout for the next big property investment. How he managed to amass so much wealth is anybody’s guess, but with the right financial strategy (and a few lucky dice rolls) Mr. Monopoly aims to further fill his coffers by achieving a monopoly on properties around Atlantic City, New Jersey (and hopefully have some pocket money leftover for niece Sandy and nephew Andy).
General Information[]
Entrance[]
A trapdoor bursts open on the stage floor and Mr. Monopoly leaps out. The door closes right before he lands back on it, ready for battle.
Kirby Hat[]
Kirby gains a black silk top hat and a white moustache.
Taunts[]
Up Taunt: Mr. Monopoly pulls out a piggy bank and holds it up to his ear, giving it a light shake.
Down Taunt: Mr. Monopoly pulls his pockets out and shrugs at the camera. A classic pose.
Side Taunt: Mr. Monopoly throws his arms out in a Showman-like manner, spinning his cane around on one finger.
Victory Poses[]
- Mr. Monopoly rests on his cane and tips his hat, giving the camera a wink. “Be a tycoon… like me!”
- Multi-coloured money rains down from the sky; Mr. Monopoly gleefully doffs his hat and moves it around to catch as many bills as he can.
- Mr. Monopoly performs his funky victory dance from the Monopoly Jr. PC game.
Other Poses[]
Idle Animation 1: Mr. Monopoly gives his moustache a twirl.
Idle Animation 2: Mr. Monopoly crosses his arms with an amused swagger.
Sleep Animation: Mr. Monopoly falls sleep, flopping down onto a comfy pile of cash; he quickly wakes up and the pile vanishes.
Shield Break Animation: Mr. Monopoly’s leans on his cane and clutches his head in a daze. Is this what bankruptcy feels like?!
Screen KO: Mr. Monopoly lands spread eagle against the screen; a few randomly-coloured bills get knocked out from the impact and flutter down as he slides offscreen.
Losing Animation: Mr. Monopoly wipes his eye with a $100 bill (referencing Monopoly for Sore Losers)
Moveset[]
Standard Special[]
Roll the Die: Mr. Monopoly pulls out a six-sided Die and rolls it on the ground in front of him. The number it lands on will flash above the Die before a random metallic Token (Top Hat, Race Car, Thimble, Scottie Dog, Cat, or Rubber Duck) spawns in its place. The Token will ‘bounce’ along the playing field the number of times the Die landed on. For instance, rolling a ‘four’ will send the Token bouncing along four times (about 2 Kirby’s worth of distance between bounces, similar to how Springs move on the 75m stage) in the direction Mr. Monopoly was facing when he rolled the Die. This simulates how players move Tokens along the board in the original game, and can serve as a good defensive move to keep opponents away. After rolling Mr. Monopoly can reclaim the Die by picking it up to use the move again (it’ll also vanish after 10 seconds and be ready for re-roll). Similar to King K. Rool’s crown opponents can pick up the Die to prevent Mr. Monopoly from using it, and even throw it to roll and spawn their own Token attack if they’re quick!
Side Special[]
Wheelbarrow: Though once considered the least popular player Token in Monopoly (and is now discontinued), the Wheelbarrow gets its due in Smashtopia. A silver Wheelbarrow appears in Mr. Monopoly’s hands as he dashes forward - the move acts as a command grab, scooping up any opponent(s) or projectiles it comes in contact with. The move travels a set distance of about two thirds of Battlefield, after which Mr. Monopoly dumps the contents of the wheelbarrow out, sending any amassed opponents or projectiles flying. The move can also be reflected; careful not to get sent wheelbarrowing offstage, or you may have trouble recovering!
Up Special[]
Water Show: See the Water Show for only two dollars! Mr. Monopoly gets boosted by a pair of dolphins, one on either side, which propel him skyward. At the peak of the jump, Mr. Monopoly releases the dolphins which then dive back down and disappear on the stage in a splash. It functions a bit like King Dedede’s recovery - the splash provides strong knockback to nearby opponents, and the diving dolphins can spike any opponents in the air! However, it’s a bit too thrilling for old Pennybags; he’ll receive 2% damage when using the move, so don’t overuse it! (Or maybe it’s more symbolic of him losing $2? How painful…)
Down Special[]
Property: Mr. Monopoly places down a ‘Property’ (house-shaped piece) that sits just behind him on the Z-axis. Properties can be a random colour of red, green or blue. If Mr. Monopoly is standing overtop of a Property he receives a slight buff depending on the colour:
- Red - increases attack by 1.5%
- Blue - increases defence by 1.5%
- Green - heals 0.5% damage per second.
If opponents overlap Properties they will suffer the opposite as a nerf (i.e. attack decreased by 0.5%, defence decreased by 0.5%, or 0.5% inflicted per second). In both cases the effect lingers for a couple seconds even after moving away from the property.
What’s more, Mr. Monopoly can set up to three Properties on the stage at a time. If he places down two of the same property within range (about 3-Kirbys worth), they’ll become a ‘Double Property,’ and standing anywhere between them will increase their buff/nerf:
- Double Red - increases attack by 2.0%
- Double Blue - increases defense by 2.0%
- Double Green - heals 2.0% damage per second
Opponents cannot destroy Properties; by holding Down-B Mr. Monopoly can remove the most recently placed Property, and all Properties will disappear if he is KO’d.
Final Smash[]
Short Line Railroad: “Time to take a ride!” Mr. Monopoly looks frantically at his pocket watch before glancing over his shoulder. He leaps out of sight as a large locomotor train barrels in from behind him, switching the camera to fixed-camera mode so the train is framed at the bottom. The train spans the entire playing field (usually more effective on smaller stages), and throws any struck opponents a short distance above it. Opponents won’t take too much knockback at lower damage percents, but may find themselves unable to avoid repeatedly falling back onto the top of the train and getting shot into the air. Some train cars will also have open rooftops - if an opponent falls into a train car they’ll get stuck inside and will likely be carried offscreen! After about 8 seconds the train will make its way offscreen as the camera returns to normal, with Mr. Monopoly hopping back into place to resume the battle.
Extra Skill[]
Chance!: Holding Shield+B lets Mr. Monopoly draw a Chance card. He holds up a card with a ‘?’ symbol above his head for about 1.5 seconds, after which one of a variety of effects will occur:
- Advance to Go - Mr. Monopoly gains increased speed for several seconds.
- Advance Token - Mr. Monopoly hauls a metallic Battleship token from behind his back and plonks it in front of him; the move has super armour and can deal massive knockback.
- Go Back 3 Spaces - a hooked cane held by a disembodied hand yanks Mr. Monopoly back a fair distance; the impact deals damage to any opponents he passes by.
- Lunch Break - Mr. Monopoly chows down on a familiar-looking hamburger and recovers 10% health.
- Building Loan Matures - Mr. Monopoly temporarily gains the appropriate buffs for any Properties he has placed, regardless of where he is onstage.
- It’s Your Birthday! - Every opponent receives a damage penalty, and Mr. Monopoly heals the total amount. E.g. against 3 opponents he steals 5% from each; against 2 opponents, 7.5% from each; against 1 opponent, 15%. Mr. Monopoly celebrates the occasion with a party blower.
- Get out of Jail Free - Mr. Monopoly is surrounded by a protective aura for about 10 seconds; if he falls offscreen or hits a blast zone he’ll fly back up within recovery distance thanks to the wings he temporarily sprouts on his back.
- Go to Jail - Mr. Monopoly gets dragged along the ground by Officer Mallory for a few seconds, receiving continuous minor damage and leaving him open to attacks. There’s a chance he’ll say “I’m too young to go to jaaaail!”
Full Moveset[]
Regular Attacks:[]
Neutral Attack: Mr. Monopoly jabs with the head of his cane, followed by a swift kick, then finishes with a solid underhand swing with the tip of his cane.
Neutral Attack (Held Down): Following the initial two jabs, Mr. Monopoly holds out a stack of money and rapidly flips through the nearly infinite bills; the flurry ends by uppercutting with the stack, the sheer amount of cash sending the opponent flying.
Forward Tilt: Mr. Monopoly jabs his hand out palm-up, as if demanding money from his opponent.
Up Tilt: Mr. Monopoly raises a shiny gold diamond ring above his head to quickly admire it.
Down Tilt: Mr. Monopoly swipes low with his cane, which can sometimes trip opponents.
Dash Attack: Mr. Monopoly dashes and thrusts out a newspaper with his face on the front page.
Smash Attacks:[]
Forward Smash: Mr. Monopoly swings a sturdy pick-axe into the ground in front of him
Up Smash: Mr. Monopoly crouches and flings open a big blue chest. A heavy coin bag bursts up from inside into the air before falling back in; the bag travels higher vertically if the move is charged longer.
Down Smash: Two babies appear in Mr. Monopoly’s arms who both let out a shrill wail, emitting soundwaves to hit on either side as he tries to soothe them.
Aerial Attacks:[]
Neutral Aerial: Mr. Monopoly faces the camera, clutching his head in surprise and kicking out his feet as ‘$’ signs flash all around him.
Forward Aerial: Mr. Monopoly takes an overhead swing with a small hammer.
Back Aerial: Mr. Monopoly swings a stocking full of cash behind him.
Up Aerial: Mr. Monopoly triumphantly thrusts a bouquet of flowers overhead.

Up Throw: Mr. Monopoly uses both hands to fling his opponent into the air with a theatrical flourish.
Down Throw: Mr. Monopoly pushes his opponent down, forcing them into a sitting position (as if they’d just suffered a trip). He pats their head and hands them a dollar coin, which heals them for 1% damage. How generous! And patronizing!
Floor Attacks:[]
Floor Attack: While knocked down and lying on the stage, Mr. Monopoly’s leg becomes encased in a cast; disgruntled, he clambers to his feet as a crutch appears in each hand, smacking them down one side at a time (the cast and crutches vanish once the attack ends).
Edge Attack: Mr. Monopoly hoists himself over the ledge and lunges across the ground on his front, frantically thrusting a wad of cash in front of him.

Additional Traits If Mr. Monopoly Self-Destructs via being dragged offscreen by Officer Mallory on his last stock, his losing screen will instead feature him in a prison outfit clutching at the bars with a defeated expression.
