Character Info[]
When first booting up Rhythm Heaven Fever, Marshal is there to greet you! Alongside his friends, Miss Ribbon and Cam, Marshal represents the Rhythm Heaven welcoming committee. He bears a resemblance to Play-Yan, the original Night Walk representative, and even takes his role from him in Fever onward. He also bears a striking resemblance to the Chorus Kids. Could Marshal, Play-Yan, and the Chorus Kids be related? Marshal is known as "Matt" when he travels to Britain.
General Information[]
Entrance[]
Marshal flies in Mary Poppins-style, but on a gaggle of Night Walk balloons instead of an umbrella. Once his feet touch the ground, he lets the balloons fly and is ready for battle.
Kirby Hat[]
Kirby's mouth becomes slack with one visible tooth, resembling Marshal's.
Taunts[]
Up Taunt: He may not be tall enough to join the Tall Tappers, but Marshal performs his best rendition of their tap dance all the same.
Down Taunt: Marshal breaks out a tambourine. Tapping on the particular taunt button that the tambourine is mapped to will see Marshal tap his hand against the tambourine, producing a percussive sound. This enables Marshal to play along to any beat the player sees fit. After a short period of inactivity, the tambourine will disappear and Marshal will return to battle.
Side Taunt: Calling back to the Coin Toss minigame, Marshal flips one in his hand, slyly catching it.
Victory Poses[]
- Marshal is joined by the Reporter, who proclaims, "Whoa, you go, big guy!" Marshal, mimicking the Wrestler, flexes the muscles you never knew he had.
- Two Chorus Kids appear to Marshal's right; standing from left to right, Marshal is tallest, followed by the second Chorus Kid, and then the first. The first (smallest) Chorus Kid sings, "Smaaa-". They are then followed by the second, who sings, "-aaaa-". Marshal follows, adding "--aaash!" to the chorus.
- Marshal is met by his good friends, Miss Ribbon and Cam, who perform a quick synchronized dance which ends in the same pose as their promotional art from Rhythm Heaven Fever.
Moveset[]
Standard Special[]
Fillbot: Marshal, Fillbot in-hand, begins to fill the robot up with juice that allows it to function. Pressing the special attack button to its designated Rhythm, Marshal is able to fill the Fillbot upwards of three times; three being the Fillbot's maximum capacity. At minimum charge, a Fillbot will lazily waddle forward, offering meager damage to opponents that it hits. At medium charge, it will briskly move forward, moving its arms to and fro and causing a fair amount of damage. At full charge, the Fillbot will flail its arms wildly as it speeds ahead, dishing out the most possible melee damage that this move can muster. If the Fillbot is overfilled, it will slip from out of Marshal's hands and cause a small explosion, damaging Marshal. If any opponents are caught in the blast zone, they'll be hurt, too.
Side Special[]
Karate Man: Marshal leans into his knowledge of Marth's Dolphin Slash for his best Karate Joe impression. At first glance, Marshal dishes out a single, forward-moving punch that dishes out modest damage. Leading into the move's Rhythm, however, and Marshal will then unleash a second more powerful punch with his dominant arm, taking him forward a little further. Chain it a third time, and he'll give us his best uppercut, gaining further strength that sees opponents caught in the attack launched upwards. Finally, fulfill this rhythmic chain and Marshal will unleash a flurry of punches akin to one of Knuckle Joe's finishing moves, with the given ability to send enemies flying! Fragile shields should steer clear of the third and fourth segments of this move!
Up Special[]
Heaven's Chord: Marshal becomes meditative, lifting his arms up in a way that signifies his peace of mind. He then begins to tap dance in such a way that it's ethereal, sparkles surrounding him as Heaven World's light shines from above. As he moves upward, a spiral staircase of piano keys appears which he traverses. They play up an actual key scale several times over, from the lowest key of the piano to the highest. The move takes him up a respectable couple of Kirbys high to begin with, and almost instantaneously, but it requires the player to follow rhythmic cues to carry him higher.
Luckily, the move offers a forgivable, low-tempo rhythm system at first, making it fairly easy to rise upwards with his subtle tap dancing taking him towards the stars. The move does carry up the pace the higher that you go, however, with the rhythm shifting and molding itself to faster, more offbeat inputs in the second half. If you fall off of the rhythm train, though, Marshal will free fall. The move is also able to be carried in a slight arc to the left or right so that it isn't stationary upwards. There are elements of super armor that enact with each rhythmic push upwards, too, helping Marshal avoid what would otherwise be easy pickin's from his opponents. There is also a chance that Heaven World's light will pulse with a successful rhythmic chain, lightly healing Marshal. The higher he goes, the better the chances of getting this effect are. He can ultimately raise himself four staircases high before the move forces an end.
Down Special[]
Flipper-Flop: A Rhythm Heaven-styled fluffy seal appears beside Marshal, and he hops on. Marshal is then able to roll around the stage on top of the seal. However, he will move laughably slow unless following the rising tempo set out by the Rhythm Tambourine. To do so, Marshal can move in any direction whilst continually pressing the standard special button to the beat. As the player continues to press the button on time, Marshal will continually pick up the pace whilst rolling on the gleeful seal. Collision with an opponent will cause the move to "flop", with the seal flopping back off into the sea with a leap off-screen and Marshal falling on his butt.
However, it can be dished with quite a bit of damage to them depending on how many times in a row that Marshal was able to keep the beat. A few presses will dish out a decent amount of damage, but the rhythm can be stacked upwards of 15 times to heighten damage and knockback to extremes. Beware, however, as Marshal will move a little faster with each successful move to the beat! Marshal can also "flop" by relenting from the rhythm while going too fast, which will result in him falling off of the seal, but without the glory of hurting any opponents.
Final Smash[]
Rhythmic Remix: Marshal stamps his foot on the ground, and a piano staircase from Heaven's Chord erects from the earth beside him. Any opponents struck by its sudden appearance will be drawn into a cinematic Final Smash! Herein, Marshal engages in a Rhythmic Remix, running towards his frightened foes with aplomb. A troupe of Fillbots move forward, assaulting enemies as Marshal rides in on a Flipper-Flop seal, letting it fling into the onslaught. As the Fillbots explode and the seal rolls back from whence it came, Marshal dishes out a specialized Karate Man combo unto his opponents, with a flurry of fast-moving fists followed up by him taking one last piano staircase and smashing it into them. Curiously, all of this is done to the beat of an ascending rhythm, too! Marshal lives for the beat... but his opponents might not as they're sent flying from this CG FS!
Extra Skills[]
Love Lab: Hold the Extra Skill button down and help Marshal shake a potion to the beat! If you let the potion loose on-beat with its Rhythm Tambourine input, Marshal will fling the potion forwards in an upwards arc. If it's let go off-beat, Marshal drops it in front of him and damages himself in a puff of smoke. Each time that you reach a rhythmic beat, the potion changes colors and effects. It starts off as a red potion, then yellow, then blue, and the cycle repeats. A red one causes a small patch of fire to appear, yellow stuns opponents similarly to the Deku Nut, and blue will cause a small, blue aura to emanate. It sets opponents to sleep if they walk into its range.
Unique Traits[]
Rhythm Tambourine: Most of Marshal's moves respond to a designated rhythm. An attack that can chain into the rhythm will have audial and visual cues presented to the player so that they might hold the beat; audial in a light percussive noise presented, and visual with a tambourine icon beside his stock image. The visual cue shifts from an untouched tambourine to a whacked tambourine each time Marshal should press into the rhythm. Most attacks follow a near-standard, near-universal rhythm with fewer shifts, although special moves may veer from the universal rhythm to bring more spice to proceedings.
