Character Info[]

Leader of Boos, ruler of the Paranormal Dimension, ally of Bowser, and arch-nemesis of Luigi, it’s King Boo! This phantasmal monarch first came into the picture when Professor E. Gadd captured one of his servants, Boolossus, and trapped him in a painting. After freeing his loyal soldier, King Boo decided that wasn’t enough and he created an entire mansion to trick Mario & Luigi as revenge for their senseless slaughter against his Boo brethren. While Mario was easy to capture, Luigi proved to be much more evasive prey, perhaps due to his more cowardly nature. Despite his eventual defeat at Luigi’s hands, King Boo showed that it’s not that easy to keep a Boo down as he plotted to return and attempt to get his revenge again. And again.

General Information[]

Entrance[]

King Boo will materialize on the stage from nowhere and make a scary face as he tries to intimidate his opponents.

Kirby Hat[]

Kirby will wear King Boo’s jeweled crown on his head. Kirby will also lose his feet (when not using them for attacks) and gain a ghost tail as he now floats above the ground.

Taunts[]

Up Taunt: King Boo will cover his eyes with his hands looking momentarily terrified, similar to how normal Boos behave when Mario is looking at them. King Boo however is merely faking it, so a moment later he’ll move his hands and make a scary face and laugh.

Down Taunt: King Boo will quickly sink into the ground for a quick moment before popping back up. When he returns King Boo will be wearing either Mario’s, Luigi’s, Wario’s, or Waluigi’s caps. It’ll take King Boo a moment to notice, but when he does he’ll shake his head to make the cap fall off before placing his crown back where it belongs.

Side Taunt: King Boo sits at the Mad Piano, playing a sudden horrifying flourish that sets the sentient instrument a-grinnin’.

Victory Poses[]

  1. King Boo will fly in from the side as several normal Boos follow and swirl around him. King Boo will twist and spiral through the air before coming to a stop in the middle of the screen as the other Boos pose around him.
  2. A portrait appears floating beside King Boo and he turns to observe it. The subject could be any number of portrait ghosts, from Neville to Chauncey or Bogmire to Boolossus, Madame Clairvoya, or Mister Luggs.
  3. King Boo won’t be seen on the screen for several seconds, making players think he just won’t show up, until he suddenly pops into view, super close to the camera, to jump scare the players with a scream.

When King Boo is the winner of a match, instead of his opponents performing their standard Defeat Animations on the results screen, all of them will be trapped in paintings in King Boo looking terrified at their fate.

Defeat Pose[]

  1. When King Boo loses, he won’t be clapping while looking sad, he’ll do so while trapped inside of a portrait!

Moveset[]

Standard Special[]

Ghastly Whisps / Vicious Vacuum: King Boo spits a straight-moving blue flame forward that travels about as quickly as Luigi’s Fireball. He can spit out as many of these out in a row as he would like without much lag, since they only deal so little damage and knockback at once. Think Falco’s Laser. Hold the attack button though, and King Boo will activate his Vicious Vacuum. While he cannot suck up foes, he can suck up all of his Ghastly Whisps in the near vicinity and then press the button again to spit them all out at once in one bigger, gnarlier fireball. He can suck up items, though. While he’ll obtain the item, this will also make him lose all momentum on gathering whisps and cancel out the impact of the move. The whisps in their normal, smaller forms carry different properties than their larger counterparts, however, and present different strategies. They will stick to their foes, lowering their attack strength for a few brief moments that can be stacked depending on the number of whisps stuck to them at any time. Generally, up to five whisps will be on-field and can be sucked up by King Boo at a time.

Side Special[]

Phantasmal Thunder: King Boo’s crown will spark with electricity before a bolt of electricity will strike 1 Ridley away from him. By holding down the special button the player can use the control stick to change which exact spot the bolt will fall. This can only be down up to 1 Ridley away in either direction of the default position allowing for this move to be used either directly centered on King Boo, 2 Ridleys away, or any space in between. Much like with Ectoplasm, this attack is not actually associated with Lightning damage and is instead Darkness.

Up Special[]

Ecto Trail: King Boo vanishes into a glowing white mist that can be telegraphed by the player in free movement, like Pit’s Brawl recovery. About five seconds later, this culminates in King Boo’s reappearance with a victorious “Blehh!” Whatever movement was telegraphed on the way there will be raptured by a trail of dark, flaming ectoplasm upon King Boo’s declaration, dealing strong damage to anyone caught by it. Additionally, the ectoplasm might impress itself upon King Boo’s foes, slowing them down for a brief moment of time.

Down Special[]

Portrification: A portrait will appear in front of King Boo with a spooky background and remain there for about a second. If the portrait is hit by a melee attack then the damage will be halved as the offending fighter gets sucked into the portrait. The portrait will then be filled with a picture of that fighter looking terrified for a moment before they are blasted out away from King Boo taking damage.

Final Smash[]

Boo Parade: King Boo will fade into nothing before reappearing, significantly larger, in the stage’s background. King Boo will then begin to wave his arms around as if directing a parade, as a swarm of Boos come flying in from either the left or right side of the screen. The side of the screen the Boos fly in from can be influenced by tilting the control stick once King Boo appears in the background, however if there is no tilt then a side will be chosen at random. While the Boos are numerous, each one deals a relatively small amount of knockback. The Boos will fly from one side of the screen to the other in a wavy pattern going all the way to the blast zones before disappearing. The Boos disappear after hitting one fighter so players who try to hide it out on the right side of the screen might get lucky if someone on the left is hitting all the Boos for them.

Extra Skill[]

Vanishing Act: King Boo covers his eyes, becoming transparent and “disappearing” when he does. He can hold for up to five seconds before being forced back into play. While hiding, he cannot do anything besides hide. If he is near an item or a teammate, using the move right beside them will also cause them to disappear with him. While in this state, attacks will phase right through him, except for most Final Smashes. This is not a counter, but if an opponent hits him in this state, they may have a chance of becoming spooked, causing a defense debuff while they shudder for a number of seconds.

Unique Traits[]

King Boo has two extra mid-air jumps.
