Character Info[]

Hey wait a minute isn’t this just Mario dressed up as a doctor? Dr. Mario and his assistant Nurse Toadstool both work at the Mushroom Kingdom Hospital where they specialize in virus study and treatment with Megavitamins. Dr. Mario has treated many viral infections over the years, but none more common than Fever, Chill, and Weird. Regardless of whether or not he actually has a medical degree, Dr. Mario has amassed quite the following and when a viral outbreak came to the Mushroom Kingdom he was able to recruit many new doctors to his side including Dr. Luigi, Dr. Morton Koopa Jr., and Dr. Luma.

General Information[]

Entrance[]

A small wall of Megavitamins will be seen on screen before they begin to disappear Megavitamin by Megavitamin revealing that Dr. Mario was behind them the whole time looking confident.

Kirby Hat[]

Kirby will wear Dr. Mario’s head mirror around his head.

Taunts[]

Up Taunt: Dr. Mario will pull out a syringe containing either a red, blue, or yellow liquid. After giving the tip of it a quick tap and seeing some liquid fall out, he will put the syringe back away.

Down Taunt: Dr. Mario will pull out a clipboard which presumably contains the medical information of one of his opponents and utters a “Hmm” sound.

Side Taunt: Dr. Mario will pull out a random Megavitamin which will roll up his arm a bit before being flicked up into the air and caught in a quick grab.

Victory Poses[]

  1. Dr. Mario will cradle his chin with his hand deep in thought as he casually taps his foot against the ground and glances towards the camera.
  2. A Virus will be seen running towards Dr. Mario from the background causing Dr. Mario to turn behind him slightly and throw two Megavitamins at the Virus to defeat it. Following that, Dr. Mario will turn back towards the camera and brush off his shoulders.
  3. Dr. Mario will hold his stethoscope in one hand and a cleaning rag in the other as he scrubs his stethoscope clean. When he’s satisfied with it Dr. Mario will hold his stethoscope towards the screen and show off how shiny it is.

Moveset[]

Standard Special[]

Megavitamins: Similar to Mario and his classic Fireballs, Dr. Mario can toss Megavitamins at his opponents. These Megavitamins can’t be absorbed however and while their bounce trajectory is higher than the fireballs, they’ll only bounce twice before disappearing. The knockback is negligible, but the damage from each Megavitamin is actually variable and is dependent on what two colors each Megavitamin is made up of. A Red half is worth 2% damage, a Blue half is worth 2.5% damage, and a Yellow half is worth 3% damage. This means that if a Blue-Red Megavitamin hits a player they’ll be dealt 4.5% damage while a Yellow-Yellow Megavitamin would deal 6% damage.

Side Special[]

Defibrillator: From his coat, Dr. Mario will pull out a set of red defibrillator paddles and hold them in his hands as he lets out a small electric blast in front of him. Alternatively, Dr. Mario can charge this move which will show him rubbing the defibrillator paddles against each other with little sparks emitting from them. These sparks will get more intense the longer Dr. Mario charges this move. Naturally, the longer this move is charged the more damage it does on release and at full charge it is capable of breaking shields and sending opponents flying. At lower levels of charge the move is still capable of draining shields, but only if they are already weakened.

This move takes about as long to charge as Donkey Kong’s Giant Punch, but if you try charging much further past that the defibrillator paddles will instead backfire. If this occurs Dr. Mario will be covered in a puff of smoke as he takes a light amount of damage. Additionally, if this move backfires then Dr. Mario will be unable to use it for about 10 seconds.

Up Special[]

Stretcher: Whether he is on the ground or in the air, Dr. Mario will spawn a red stretcher below him which will bounce him up high into the air. This recovery is similar to Sonic’s and Pac-Man’s in that it doesn’t actually damage opponents. Dr. Mario is able to use this move to chain into another jump or attack after being launched into the air.

If Dr. Mario uses this move on the ground, the stretcher will stay behind for a brief couple seconds allowing other characters to jump on it and be propelled into the air. If a third character tries to use the Stretcher then when they jump on it the stretcher will break and cause that character to be grounded as if they were hit by a Pitfall item. Alternatively if Dr. Mario had used this move while in the air, then after being propelled up into the air, the stretcher would fall down to the ground. If it hits another fighter at this point that opponent will be damaged and be hit by a spike attack. The stretcher, whether it hits an opponent or the stage, will break on impact.

Down Special[]

Infection: With this special move one of three Viruses will jump out of Dr. Mario’s coat and startle the doctor. This Virus will mill about a bit as it wanders slightly where it was summoned, but doesn’t really go exploring or running about the stage. However when an enemy player gets close to the Virus they’ll suddenly snap to attention and try to attack the player. The Virus won’t chase them around the whole stage, but if the player stays near they’ll keep trying to hit them. If a Virus makes contact with a Player they’ll end up dealing a small amount of damage to the player and disappearing inside of their body. When this occurs, the Player becomes Infected by the Virus.

While Infected a little portrait of the Virus will appear next to the Player’s damage percent indicating their Infection and which specific Virus called it. Each of the three Viruses has their own Infection they inflict on a player, but beyond that they function virtually the same. Red Fever Viruses have a 40% chance to spawn and will infect players with a 20% damage reduction to their attacks that lasts for 10 seconds. Blue Chill Viruses have a 40% chance to spawn and will infect players with a reduction to their defenses making them take 20% more damage for 10 seconds. Yellow Weird Viruses have a 20% chance to spawn and will infect players with reversed left and right controls for 5 seconds.

Perhaps thankfully a player cannot be infected with more than 1 of a single type of Virus at a time. However they can be affected by all three different Viruses at once. Dr. Mario however can only have 2 Viruses out on the field at a time. If he tries to summon a third then the oldest one will disappear. If a Virus disappears because it has Infected a player however that does not count against Dr. Mario’s number of Viruses.

Final Smash[]

The Doctors Are In: As the Final Smash is activated Dr. Mario will take hold of a stretcher and will push it forward with force sending it flying in a straight line. The first opponent that the stretcher hits (if anyone gets hit) will be hit for a small amount of damage before being pulled into a cinematic. The cinematic will open in a hospital room showing the opponent in a hospital bed looking sickly. The camera will then pan to show Dr. Mario is surrounded by a group of other doctors including Dr. Peach, Dr. Bowser, Dr. Yoshi, Dr. Wario, Dr. Donkey Kong, Dr. Toad, Dr. Rosalina, Dr. Petey Piranha, Dr. Goomba Tower, and Dr. Lakitu. All of these doctors are seen standing in a half-circle surrounding the patient with Dr. Mario at their center. Suddenly, all the doctors will start hurling a storm of Megavitamins at the patient attempting to cure them of their illness. Finally the Megavitamins will stop raining down only for Dr. Mario to pull out a supersized Megavitamin which he chucks at the patient. This final Megavitamin will deal the final hit and it’s impact will end the cinematic and send the patient flying across the stage as the fight transitions back to the stage.

Extra Skill[]

Vaccination: Dr. Mario will pull out a slightly oversized syringe from his coat filled with either red, blue, or yellow liquid. The color is merely an aesthetic however and has no effect on the attack. Once the syringe is out Dr. Mario will perform a slight forward lunge forward hoping to jab the syringe’s needle into a nearby player. If Dr. Mario is successful; the attack will deal a small amount of damage and knockback to the opponent. By default, this attack isn’t that powerful. However, if Dr. Mario is able to hit an opponent who is currently being afflicted by some form of status effect (whether that’s a Timer’s slow down effect, a Super Mushroom’s size increase, or even the effects of one of Dr. Mario’s three Viruses from the Infection special move) then the amount of damage and knockback will increase. This increase to the attack’s strength will stack for each status effect that the opponent has on them up to three effects. This means that you could theoretically max out an opponent's Status Effects stacks for this move by hitting them with all three of Dr. Mario’s Viruses.

When this occurs, the opposing player will not only be hurt, but any status effects that they had placed on them at the time of the attack will be removed. This includes both positive effects like Shulk’s Monado Arts as well as Negative Effects like Gengar’s Cursed Body. There are two exceptions to this. A player under the effects of a Super Star cannot be damaged as they are currently invincible. The other exception is a player covered in a Final Smash aura. This aura does not count as a status effect for either part of this attack.

Dr. Mario is capable of Wall Jumping and Crawling along the stage.
