Character Info[]

Father of Donkey Kong Jr., and grandfather to the more modern Donkey Kong, Cranky is where it all began! Once upon a time he was a big strong ape who would kidnap ladies and carry them through construction sites. Years later he’s now a cranky old man who prefers to reminisce about the good ‘ol days before 3D and when all you needed to play a good game was a single joystick with a single button. Despite his age he can still throw down, though perhaps not with the best of them. He may be more likely to run a shop and give advice, but he still knows how to get good use out of his cane.

General Information[]

Entrance[]

Cranky Kong first appears as the classic 8-bit sprite of Donkey Kong before morphing into his more modern 3D appearance.

Kirby Hat[]

Kirby will gain Cranky Kong’s long white beard and tiny glasses.

Taunts[]

Up Taunt: Rabbid Cranky will appear over Cranky Kong’s shoulder and wave his cane aggressively towards the other fighters.

Down Taunt: Cranky Kong will pull out a newspaper from somewhere labeled “Smash News'' and look at it briefly. Following this, Cranky Kong will face towards the screen as a talk bubble appears next to him. These talk bubbles have a large variety of rants or “advice” that Cranky Kong can give to the player and other fighters. Some possible quotes are, “That’s right, 4 shades of gray, in a 2x2 character block, that’s all we had…””, “Don’t forget to save your replay!”, “Gimme some of those coins. I have bills to pay.”, “Just because you try hard doesn’t mean you’ll make it into the battle.”, and “You must recover!”

Side Taunt: Cranky Kong will pull out a colored potion and shake it up and down in his spare hand. The potion will fizzle as it fires up a short jet of foam that blasts Cranky Kong in the face. The remnants remain on Cranky Kong’s face for a few moments before they disappear. This potion can be a variety of colors including green, red, blue, yellow, orange, or purple.

Victory Poses[]

  1. Cranky Kong will be seen sleeping in his rocking chair as it rocks back and forth. That fight wore him out and he deserves a nice rest.
  2. A phonograph will sit on the screen next to Cranky Kong as it plays the first few seconds of the main theme from the original Donkey Kong game instead of his normal victory music. As this is taking place, Cranky Kong will be seen doing what counts as “jamming” for him; tapping his foot against the floor while rocking his head ever so slightly to the beat.
  3. Cranky Kong will bounce down from the top of the screen on his cane. Cranky Kong won’t stick the landing quite right and will stumble before regaining his footing and leaning hard on his cane for support.

Moveset[]

Standard Special[]

Denture Popgun: Cranky Kong will toss in front of him a pair of dentures which land on the stage a short distance away from him. By holding down the Special Button, Cranky Kong is capable of slightly altering the exact angle that the dentures are thrown. These dentures act similarly to Bowser Jr.’s Mechakoopas as they move across the platform they were thrown on for a short time. If the dentures are able to make contact with another fighter they will bite down hard onto their leg dealing damage and a small amount of knockback. The dentures will move around for about 7 seconds and if they are unable to bite onto an opponent by then they will break apart in a small explosion. Dentures will also break on contact if they hit an opponent’s shield. Unlike Bowser Jr.’s Mechakoopas these dentures cannot be picked up and thrown. If Cranky Kong tries to send out another pair of dentures when one is still active on the field, the previous dentures will break apart as if their timer had run out.

Side Special[]

Bongo Rocket: Cranky Kong will slap on his trusty Bongo Rockets from DK Barrel Blast which allow him to power ahead with his arm outstretched in a fist. This move can be angled like Diddy Kong’s Up Special and can even overheat. When using this move Cranky Kong will barrel forwards several free and if he runs into something the bongos will explode on impact. By repeatedly tapping the Special Button Cranky Kong will smack the bongos as he flies. This allows Cranky Kong to propel himself faster and increase the power of the attack.

Up Special[]

Jetpac: A bamboo-and-coconut jetpack of Cranky Kong’s own design during his professor days will appear on Cranky Kong’s back as he uses it to ascend into the skies. This jetpack works similarly to R.O.B.’s Robo Burner up special as you have to keep the special button held down in order to keep rising in the air and if you let go of it then Cranky Kong will begin to fall. Cranky Kong only has so much pineapple juice in his Jetpack’s tank and when it runs out he will fall downwards in a state of freefall. Be careful when aiming your control stick to fly through the air so that you don’t end up freefalling above an open pit!

Down Special[]

Barrel Toss: A barrel straight from the original Donkey Kong game will appear in Cranky Kong’s hands as he rolls it forward. These barrels are on the smaller scale and are shorter than Kirby is making it easy to jump over them. When they hit an opponent damage will be dealt and they will be knocked backwards horizontally into the air. Barrels break on impact either when they roll into an opponent, a wall, items like Crates, or if they roll off of a platform and land down onto another one. There is a 10% chance that when Cranky Kong uses this move he’ll roll a blue explosive barrel instead. These barrels explode on contact dealing a greater amount of fire damage and knockback.

Final Smash[]

Barrel Bolt Barrage: This Final Smash will begin with Rabbid Cranky appearing from behind Cranky Kong’s back and leaping off of it as he flies forwards in a straight line. If Rabbid Cranky makes contact with an opponent he will grab onto their shoulders with one hand and grab the background of the screen with the other to rip away the background before transitioning into a cutscene. The cutscene will pick up with the opponent picking themselves off the ground at Banana Lagoon only to be face to face with Cranky Kong and Rabbid Cranky standing side by side. Both Cranky Kong and Rabbid Cranky will be armed with a pair of Boombows with explosive Barrel Bolts as their ammunition. The two Crankys will unleash an assault of explosive barrels at the opponent who eventually just gets blown sky high from the sheer number of explosives before they reappear back on the field of battle heavily damaged and knocked away.

Extra Skill[]

Barrel Shield: A barrel labeled “CK” will appear next to Cranky Kong just in time for the old ape to hop inside of it. While Cranky Kong is ducked inside of this barrel he’s unable to attack and can only move slowly as he attempts to waddle with the barrel. His jumping capability is also reduced to the shortest of short hops which aren’t enough to get over even the lowest ground-level attack. The trade-off is that if Cranky Kong is attacked while hiding inside of this barrel he’s immune to any damage and knockback he would ordinarily receive. This barrel however can only take so much punishment and if it receives a total of 20% damage from attacks then it will be destroyed with Cranky Kong taking some self-damage and knockback from letting his barrel be destroyed. Once destroyed, Cranky Kong is incapable of using this Extra Skill again until he is KO’d. Once Cranky Kong has hidden inside of his barrel he can leave it at anytime by tapping the Extra Skill input again. This move is best utilized when Cranky Kong is in a tight bind, such as a last ditch effort to evade a powerful attack like a Bob-omb being tossed at him or Ganondorf’s classic “DORIAH!”
