The year is 2072. Citadel Station, owned by the TriOptimum Corporation, is a bastion of genetic, pharmacological and robotics research. When Vice President Edward Diego hires a Hacker to remove the AI SHODAN’s ethical restraints, she gains a megalomaniacal consciousness and takes over the station, running experiments on the surviving crew and aiming its charging laser directly at Earth. It’s up to the Hacker to navigate the labyrinthine station and disable SHODAN before she ascends to digital godhood.
Stage Layout[]
The stage is based on the station’s first level, Medical. A long corridor stretches into the background; the foreground is framed by two walls that face the camera and lead toward walkoffs on either side. Both walls have an embedded LCD screen displaying the TriOptimum logo, which will occasionally switch to display SHODAN. They can be shattered by attacking an opponent standing in front of them, similar to the boards on Suzaku Castle. Each wall also has a platform jutting out further above. Occasionally a panel in the center will slide open and reveal a Grav Shaft, which players can use to float up and access the platforms more easily.
During a Stamina match with two players remaining, if an opponent’s HP reaches 0 a secret cutscene will trigger (based on System Shock’s game over sequence). The screen will fill with red static before cutting to the downed opponent lying on the floor. A Cortex Reaver will approach and drag the opponent headfirst into its core. The camera will show the opponent screaming (Star KO sound) as they are converted into a cyborg, growing silent as their eyes flash a blank white. The camera then cuts back to show the Cortex Reaver ready for its next directive, with the opponent’s body dangling from it, unresponsive. SHODAN will get in one last dig as the results appear displayed over the scene.
