Character Info[]
After her father entered a mysterious Crypt in search of the Golden Lute that would revive her deceased mother, Cadence left against her uncle Eli’s wishes to find him. Attempting to dig an entrance to the Crypt, she fell through the ground and was mortally wounded. The sinister Necrodancer then appeared and stole her heart, cursing it to beat to his music. Cadence would later awake and traverse the Crypt’s zones in order to save her father and lift her curse by defeating the Necrodancer for good.
General Information[]
Entrance[]
Cadence warps into the stage via a travel rune with the Smash symbol on it, then unsheathes her dagger.
Kirby Hat[]
Kirby gains Cadence’s blond hair and blue bandana.
Taunts[]
Up Taunt: Cadence pulls out an apple and takes a bite. It heals 5% damage, but only once per stock. Doing it again will have her pull out nothing and look at her empty hand disappointedly.
Down Taunt: Cadence digs her shovel into the ground and a diamond pops out.
Side Taunt: Cadence gives a casual wave and randomly says “hey”, “hello” or “how’s it going?”
Victory Poses[]
- Cadence slashes two skeletons on either side of her to the beat, then spins on her heel and points her dagger in a dramatic fashion.
- Cadence falls in from offscreen, landing with a thud and propping herself up with her shovel.
- Cadence leans on her shovel while jamming out with headphones on, and winks at the camera (referencing the artwork for the game’s soundtrack).
Moveset[]
Standard Special[]
Shopkeeper: The Shopkeeper appears on the Z-Axis behind Cadence (similar to Pyra’s taunt with Rex). Using gold (see Extra Skill section) Cadence can select between one of 3 randomly offered equipment. While grounded, Cadence can summon the Shopkeeper to her location with the B button, or (if already summoned) stand in front of his shop and press the B button to enter Shopping mode. The player can either purchase an item or press the Shield button to cancel. The Shopkeeper will stay in place afterwards; Cadence can press B to summon him to her location again, or press Shield+B to make him disappear altogether.
There are 3 types of equipment that can appear in the shop - Weapons, Rings, and Boots.
- Weapons:
- Longsword (30 gold) - replaces Cadence’s dagger for increased range and damage, but lower speed. Breaks after 6 successful hits.
- Flail (50 gold) - replaces Cadence’s dagger for increased range and knock-back. Breaks after 8 successful hits.
- Dagger of Frost (100 gold) - changes Cadence’s dagger to have ice properties, which has a chance of freezing an opponent. It also deals extra damage to frozen opponents. Breaks after 12 successful hits, after which it can be thrown like a Freezie.
- Rings:
- Ring of Might (30 gold) - slightly increases attack. Vanishes after 20 seconds.
- Ring of War (50 gold) - increases attack and knock-back, as well as damage and knock-back received. Vanishes after 20 seconds.
- Ring of Shielding (100 gold) - increased shield durability; breaks upon being hit and turns Cadence invincible for 8 seconds. Otherwise, vanishes after 30 seconds.
- Boots:
- Boots of Speed (30 gold) - slightly increases walking and dashing speed. Vanishes after 20 seconds
- Lead Boots (50 gold) - increases Cadence’s weight and falling speed. Vanishes after 20 seconds.
- Boots of Leaping (100 gold) - grants an additional midair jump. Vanishes after 30 seconds.
Buying a certain type of equipment will replace the one currently equipped. After a Weapon breaks Cadence will toss it over her shoulder. She can grab and throw the used Weapon similar to Robin with his discarded tomes. Cadence will lose all of her gold and any equipment if KO’d, so play carefully.
Also, during matches that take place on Heart of the Crypt, the Shopkeeper will lend his operatic singing to certain songs after remaining onstage for a few seconds. Pressing Shield+B to make him vanish will halt his singing until after he is summoned again.
Side Special[]
Earth: Cadence summons a wall of earth from the ground in front of her, which springs up to about her height. Any opponents caught underneath it will be launched into the air, making it a great combo-starter. It also works as a defensive option and can withstand about 15% damage before crumbling. If left alone it will disappear on its own after 10 seconds; Cadence must wait until then before she can summon another.
Up Special[]
Cat 'o Nine Tails/Whip: Cadence lashes out with the Cat o’ Nine Tails, which can hit multiple opponents above her. By holding the button briefly it changes to the Whip, which has greater range and automatically targets the closest opponent. Both give a slight vertical boost upon their first in the air, but only the Whip works as a tether for grabbing ledges.
Down Special[]
Pulse: Cadence uses the Pulse spell to send four green jets of offensive magic shooting out diagonally in an ‘X’ shape. Holding the button for a moment will charge the attack before shooting it out with increased damage and distance.
Final Smash[]
Absolutetion: Cadence whips out the Golden Lute and strums a chord, sending out a magical pulse rippling around her to paralyze opponents. If successful, she follows this up with several consecutive chords (similar to how Barbara the Bat’s assist trophy worked in Brawl) with each pulse dealing more damage. She finishes off with one final strum that deals higher damage and knock-back than the rest to send the opponent(s) flying.
Extra Skill[]
Groove Chain: Cadence has a heart icon next to her damage percentage that functions as a metronome, beating to a set tempo indicated by white tempo markers that drift into the center of the heart. Just like in her origin game, this metronome functions as a multiplier for collecting gold. In Smash, Cadence can carry a maximum of 150 gold. When Cadence lands an attack on her opponent right as the tempo lines overlap the middle of the heart, she’ll gain a small amount of gold. Doing this enough times will increase the gold multiplier, up to a maximum of 4.0x gold for every successful attack. However, taking too many consecutive hits from an opponent will reset the multiplier back to 1.0x. It’s key to try and land hits in time whenever possible (such as pummelling a grabbed opponent). The tempo is always the same regardless of the selected stage or its music.
