Assist Trophy Info[]

Black Mage is one of the original class changes, or jobs, that have been in the Final Fantasy franchise from the very beginning. Black Mages are known for their offensive magic capabilities and in some games are able to inflict debuffs or harmful status effects. They aren't known for their physical prowess however as they're usually only wielding a dagger or some type of staff. In the original Final Fantasy a quest involving Bahamut the Dragon King, Black Mages can be upgraded into Black Wizards if they can bring Bahamut a token of their courage.

Black Mage Crystal

Crystal

When the Black Mage appears it will immediately begin chanting a spell as four colorless crystals appear above the Black Mage's head. Every four seconds after the Black Mage begins its chant, one of the four crystals will light up. First the Earth Crystal will glow yellow. Then the Fire Crystal will glow red. Four seconds later the Water Crystal will glow blue. Finally, the Wind Crystal will glow green. One second after the Wind Crystal glows green the Black Mage will complete its chant as all four crystals briefly flash one of five colors. The color the crystals flash will signal which of the Black Mage's five spells are about to be cast. Those colors are Yellow, Red, Blue, Green, and Black.

  • Quake - The power of the Earth Crystal allows the Black Mage to cast the spell Quake. Chunks of earth will rise up around Black Mage. These chunks will either fly straight up into the air a medium distance, or will be flung a short distance to the left or right of the Black Mage. This spell is similar in a way to Metagross' Poke Ball attack, but to a greater degree.
  • Firaga - The power of the Fire Crystal allows the Black Mage to cast the spell Firaga. With this spell the Black Mage will fire out a large fireball which flies forward. On first contact with anything the fireball will explode into a large radius of flaming energy and dealing damage to anyone in its blast zone. As one would expect, items that are effected by fire damage such as the Blast Box will be triggered by this spell.
  • Blizzaga - The power of the Water Crystal allows the Black Mage to cast the spell Blizzaga. When Blizzaga is cast large icicles will being to rain down across the entirety of the stage diagonally. These ice crystals come flying in fast and create a small icy explosion on impact as tiny shards fly off of them.
  • Thundaga - The power of the Wind Crystal allows the Black Mage to cast the spell Thundaga. Thundaga will cause a terrible thunderstorm to roll across the stage as several large thunder bolts will strike down against the stage with force. Any fighters that are in the thunderbolts path will be damaged by the strike. For the most part the thunderbolts will strike the area of the stage where the Black Mage is, however some will strike in other areas.
  • Flare - The power of all the crystals combined allows the Black Mage to cast the spell Flare. Flare causes a large explosion centered on Black Mage to erupt. The term "large explosion" is a bit of a simplification as what's actually happening is a series of smaller explosions all erupting one after another in quick succession inside of a large radius around the Black Mage. Each explosion does its own damage which makes it very easy to be juggled by the multiple explosions seen in this attack.
