Stage Info[]
Mario happens upon Big Boo's Haunt after defeating just the right Boo in Princess Peach's Castle Courtyard. It drops a cage that actually acts as a transport to its boss' mansion! Is this perhaps a prototype or inspiration for a certain other plumber's own haunted home affairs just a few years later? Nonetheless, Mario must traverse the three-story mansion and its many rooms, ultimately defeating Big Boo itself to free the home of its villainous essence.
Stage Design[]
Stage Layout[]
The arguable centerpiece of Big Boo's Haunt is the massive specter's carousel! It doesn't look like a traditional carousel, per se—there aren't any horses to ride, just vibes as Mario defeats a volley of Boos who appear from picture frames surrounding the spinning wooden platform. Here, the carousel is a bit more interesting. While horsies still aren't at play, the background is now interspersed with both picture frames featuring drawings of Boos, as well as several stacked bookshelves. It's an amalgamation of Big Boo's Haunt's trademark interior, even featuring a certain piano in the background.
The bottom platform is constantly rotating—it is, after all, a carousel. Its speed will alter every so often, varying between standard, slow-paced movements to relatively quickly as action ramps up. If Big Boo is present on stage, or if the match is in its final minute, the carousel will move quickly more often. The direction it's moving will change, too, from left to right or right to left. There are three floating platforms that will move up, down, left, or right at the will of the smaller Boos that are holding them. They will flash on-screen every so often with an enthusiastic "Bleh!" when they're about to change the platforms' direction.
Stage Hazards[]
Big Boo:[]
When all three Boo pictures in the background align with the same image of an enthusiastic Boo, a burst of dark magic causes Big Boo to appear. The massive Boo stands about as tall as three Bowsers mashed together and will slowly float throughout the stage. While it is on-stage, it can curse fighters that it bumps into, causing a random status effect ranging from sleep to Lip's Stick and more. It dishes out about 20% damage if it touches you, too, and its knockback rate might be seen as surprisingly high for its slow-moving stature. 'Tis the nature of a stage boss! Big Boo can be defeated with enough attacks oriented at its rear. Attacking it from the front is for naught. If you manage to defeat Big Boo, it will disappear in a burst of darkness and a disappointed scowl, dropping a rare item on its way out of the picture. This will also grant fighters an additional KO point.
Flying Books:[]
These aren't just any ordinary books—they're enchanted! Books will lift themselves out from the confines of their shelves and hurl themselves gradually towards opponents, embalmed in a soft purple light. The books deal minor damage and flinch. With a well-timed smack, they can be sent back from whence they came.
Mad Piano:[]
The Mad Piano is here! Most of the time, it will be sit in the background of the stage, looking like an ordinary grand piano set inside of Big Boo's library. Every so often, though, it'll get hungry. When it does? Run! The impervious piano will barrel into the foreground, chomping at the bit with its ravenous maw, and run from either left to right or right to left. Those caught in its path will be dealt heavy damage and knockback, nearly equivalent to the power of the Ultimate Chimera. The saving grace here are those floating platforms. Board them, and save your behind!
Soundtrack[]
- Super Mario World
- Super Mario 64
- Luigi's Mansion
- Main Theme - This track originated in the game Luigi's Mansion, playing during cutscenes, and while Luigi was wandering around dark rooms in the mansion. Lighter and more comical versions played in Professor E. Gadd's laboratory, and when Luigi wandered around rooms that had been lit up. [SSBB]
- Main Theme - This is an orchestral remix of the main theme from Luigi's Mansion. It prominently features strings and heavy percussion, as well as a music box and a harpsichord. Halfway through, it incorporates the title theme, Dark Hallway theme, the jingle from opening the Game Boy Horror/pause menu, turns into a waltz, and crescendos into the Training theme before looping. A brief snippet of the Library Piano theme from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon can also be heard in some sections of the song. [SSBU]
- Luigi's Mansion Series Medley - This uptempo remix includes the main theme from Luigi's Mansion and the "Catching Ghost" and "Mission Complete" themes from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. The song's intro begins as if being played an a worn-out record player, then transitions into a keyboard-based techno remix of the three themes. [SSB4]
- Paper Mario
- Super Mario Sunshine
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
- On the Hunt -Gloomy Mansion ver.- (Instrumental) - This song plays when exploring the Gloomy Manor in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. The "instrumental" in the title refers to the fact that Luigi's humming can't be heard in this version.
