Stage Info[]
In Balatro players attempt to play through 8 Antes with their chosen Deck; each Ante consists of a Small Blind, a Big Blind, and one of many different Boss Blinds that attempt to hamper the player in some way. The score to clear each Blind grows increasingly higher, so players must experiment with various Jokers, Booster Packs and other card enhancements in order to persevere, or fold like a cheap suit!
Stage Layout[]
In Smashtopia the stage floats inside a swirling abstract void. The layout is similar to Small Battlefield, but with an additional 2 platforms stationed slightly above and further out from the inner 2. These smaller platforms resemble larger versions of playing cards, with their suits and ranks randomized each time the stage is selected.
Occasionally a symbol representing one of several Boss Blinds will appear in the background. The symbol will blink in place a few times (similar to when Pokemon Stadium is about to transform) before the Boss Blind’s effect activates, with a text description appearing below the symbol. Boss Blinds will remain active for roughly 20 seconds; the stage’s background colours will also change to reflect whichever Boss Blind is active. There are 8 possible Boss Blinds that can appear, which translate to debuffing fighters in various ways:
- The Fish: Forces fighters to trip if their attacks miss an opponent (missed midair attacks will trigger a trip upon landing).
- The Eye: All fighter’s moves will only deal damage on their first use; any repeated moves will deal knockback but inflict 0% damage.
- The Wall: All fighters receive an added 40% damage, which is automatically healed after the Boss Blind deactivates.
- The Wheel: 1 out of every 7 moves a fighter hits their opponent with will inflict its damage upon themselves.
- The Arm: Causes every fighter’s moves to become fully staled.
- The Mouth: The next move performed by a fighter becomes their only usable move; all other moves become disabled (be careful not to fall offstage if your recovery move becomes disabled!)
- The Flint: All fighter’s moves have their attack power and knockback halved.
- The Tooth: Receive 0.1% for any directional or button input.
If Hazards are turned off Boss Blinds will not activate, but the stage’s background will occasionally change colour.
