Character Info[]
While Steve was there from the beginning, Alex was added as an additional skin to Minecraft 5 years later during the 1.8 release “Bountiful Update”. While Alex has been implied to be female, Alex isn’t always referred to as such in the media with the topic being left vague. Years after Alex was released for Minecraft, the skins for the player were updated with Steve having the shape of the “classic” skin and Alex’s new design becoming the basis for the “slim” skin which serves to make Alex more unique when compared to other skins that the player can choose to use. Regardless, Alex is an avatar just like Steve is and is therefore capable of all of the same feats whether that’s punching a tree into blocks, traveling through alternate dimensions, and defeating all manner of beast and mob around.
General Information[]
Entrance[]
Alex will start out sleeping in bed and quickly get out of it in order to fight. As she does so, the bed will disappear and an Enchanting Table will fall behind her.
Kirby Hat[]
Like with Steve’s Kirby Hat, Kirby’s body will become Minecraft-like with his body becoming a cube and his feet and arms becoming blocky as well. Kirby’s face will also change to having a blocky look to it much like Alex’s face. Additionally, this Kirby Hat will also have Alex’s hair on top of Kirby’s blocky head.
Taunts[]
Up Taunt: Alex will pull out an enchantment book and flip through its pages as dark sorcerous script surrounds both her and the book.
Down Taunt: Alex will pull out some Mutton and chow down on it. When Alex is done eating the Mutton will disappear and Alex will let out a small burp.
Side Taunt: Alex will pull out a Carved Pumpkin and wear it over her head. This Carved Pumpkin will stay on Alex’s head until this taunt is activated again, in which case Alex will take off the Carved Pumpkin, or Alex takes 10% or more total damage from attacks, in which case the Carved Pumpkin will break and fall off.
Victory Poses[]
- A whole bunch of dirt blocks will be blocking the victory screen as you hear Alex quickly breaking through some of them with her fist. Eventually a whole will be created to reveal the winner, Alex!
- Alex will run around the victory screen setting off fireworks that explode in celebration of her victory.
- With a carrot on a stick in one hand, Alex will ride on top of a pig across the screen and stop in the center with both Alex and the Pig facing the camera.
Moveset[]
Standard Special[]
Mine / Enchant / Create Block: Depending on where Alex is when she uses this move, she’ll do one of three things. If Alex is on the ground and away from her Enchanting Table she’ll use “Mine”. If Alex is on the ground and next to her Enchanting Table she’ll use “Enchant”. Finally, if Alex is in the air she’ll use “Create Block”.
Mine - Alex will pull out a tool and use it to mine either the ground at her feet or the wall in front of her for resources. Unlike Steve, all of Alex’s tools have been enchanted with “Unbreaking'' and will never lose any durability. The tool used and the speed of her mining is determined by the type of terrain that is being mined. The longer that Alex continues to mine in one sitting, the greater the odds that higher quality materials will be collected.
The odds of Alex obtaining each different material differs depending on the stage and where on the stage Alex is mining. If Alex mines on the ground of the Gangplank Galleon stage for example, she has a higher chance of obtaining Wood. If playing on any Battlefield-form or Ω form stage, Alex will obtain materials in a fixed order which cannot be influenced by any means in order to make Alex more fair for competitive battling. If Alex is standing on top of a block created with “Create Block” then the block will be destroyed and Alex will not receive any material from it. Any materials that Alex mines will be added to her resource bar next to her Damage %.
Enchant - While at her Enchanting Table Alex will use the Lapis Lazuli she has obtained to bestow enchantments amount of equipment. When Alex interacts with the Enchanting Table a small menu will open up and show three different enchantments she can choose from. Alex has 15 different Enchantments she can choose from and each are divided into three tiers with Tier 1 being the weakest and cheapest and Tier 3 being the strongest and more expensive. Tier 1 Enchantments cost 3 Lapis Lazuli, Tier 2 Enchantments cost 5 Lapis Lazuli, and Tier 3 Enchantments cost 10 Lapis Lazuli. The Enchanting Table will always display 1 Enchantment per Tier each time it is interacted with. Leaving the Enchantment menu and re-opening it will refresh the available Enchantments. All of Alex’s Enchantments will only last for a few seconds before wearing off. The exact length can vary from one enchantment to the other, but no enchantment will last longer than 12 seconds.
While the Enchanting Table isn’t considered an obstacle that can block a fighter’s path on the stage, it can be attacked and destroyed. Enchanting Tables have 30 HP and if they are destroyed a new one will respawn next to Alex after a couple seconds. If multiple Alexes and Enchanting Tables are on the field, then any Alex can use any Enchanting Table in order to apply Enchantments.
A list of all of Alex’s Enchantments and their effects is as follows:
Tier I:
- Frost Walker - This enchantment will allow Alex to walk on water as if it were solid ground. When Alex is touching water it will be covered in a thin sheet of ice for her to use as a platform. The ice doesn’t stick around however and once Alex moves away the ice will fade. This, plus the fact that the sheet of ice is small, makes it a bad idea for another fighter to try and join Alex on the ice.
- Mending - This enchantment allows Alex to repair a non-projectile item that she is holding which has expended some of its uses (or the time it can be used), Alex can restore that item back to full. This does not however work on items that are consumed upon being used and last for a set amount of time such as Metal Boxes or Bags of Dragonite. This only works on items you can actually hold onto such as Fire Bars or Tinderboxes.
- Projectile Protection - This enchantment will give Alex some protection against projectile attacks. Any projectile attacks that hit Alex will only deal 80% of their normal amount of damage.
- Power - This enchantment will give Alex some extra oomph to her own projectile attacks. Any projectile attacks that Alex makes (including throwing items) will deal an extra 30% damage.
- Fire Aspect - This enchantment will add a fire attribute to all of Alex’s melee attacks. This can pair well during Spirit Battles or when wanting to take advantage of attacking items that take extra damage from Fire attacks like Blast Boxes.
Tier II:
- Sharpness - This enchantment will empower Alex’s melee attacks with extra damage. All melee attacks that Alex makes will deal an extra 30% damage.
- Blast Protection - This enchantment will grant Alex protection against explosions. Any explosion-related attacks will deal 40% less damage and knockback to Alex, regardless of the source.
- Knockback - This enchantment will boost the knockback potential of Alex’s attacks. All of Alex’s melee attacks will knock opponents further away than normal.
- Piercing - This enchantment will allow Alex to hit multiple opponents with projectile attacks. Any projectile attacks that Alex makes (including thrown weapons) won’t be stopped by hitting an opponent mid-flight. The opponent will take damage as normal, but then the item will continue on its path as if it didn’t hit anything. This could potentially allow Alex’s projectile attacks to hit more than one opponent.
- Cleaving - This enchantment will help Alex with defending opponents. Alex’s melee attacks will deal increased damage to shields as well as gain increased priority against some defensive techniques.
Tier III:
- Infinity - This enchantment will allow Alex to get more use out of her projectile items. When this enchantment is active, any projectile fired from an item in Alex’s hands (such as a Super Scope) will not consume any of its ammunition. Once the enchantment has faded away however, the item will lose ammunition as per normal.
- Protection - This enchantment will give Alex some protection against all incoming attacks. Any attack that hits Alex will only deal 60% of their normal amount of damage.
- Quick Charge - This enchantment will allow Alex to use her Smash Attacks sooner than before. When this enchantment is active, Alex’s Smash Attacks will charge at a faster rate allowing her to catch her opponents off guard with fully charged Smash Attacks in half the time!
- Thorns - This enchantment will make Alex dangerous to touch. While this enchantment is active, any opponent that hurts Alex with a melee attack will suffer 25% of the damage they just dealt.
- Loyalty - This enchantment lets Alex have some extra fun with her items. When this enchantment is active, any item that Alex throws (so long as it doesn’t also come at the cost of the Item’s life on the stage) will return to her hands after a few seconds allowing her to throw the same item once again.
Create Block - Alex will place a block directly beneath her in the air which functions as a solid platform. If you hold down the special button while Alex is walking on a block or jumping in the air then you can continue to place blocks directly below Alex as she moves around. Alex can’t place blocks just anywhere though. When placing a block a pink border appears on the screen showing how far away from the stage Alex is able to place a block. This prevents Alex from trying to recover from near the blast zones by placing a block. Alex can only place up to 8 blocks on the screen at a time and trying to place a ninth (or beyond) block will cause the oldest block to disappear.
Blocks will break slowly over time, but touching them or hitting the block with an attack will speed up this process. Additionally, blocks that were placed near the build limit or after Alex gets knocked into the air will flash and begin to break faster than normal. Blocks can also be used as barriers to stop incoming attacks and used for tether recoveries. Blocks are made out of the Dirt, Wood, and Stone materials that Alex has gathered. Blocks that are made with more valuable materials will take longer to break than others.
Side Special[]
Trident Toss: Alex will take a trident in hand and throw it forwards as if she were a gladiator. The trident does have a point where it starts to drop off towards the ground. For normal uses of this move, that’s it. The job is done. The trident was tossed and hopefully damaged an opponent along the way. However, if Alex has at least 5 Lapis Lazuli stocked when activating this side special she will enchant the trident with “Channeling” before throwing it. Naturally, this consumes the 5 Lapis Lazuli. If an enchanted trident hits an opponent then a short bolt of lightning will rip through the stage and go right through the opponent that was hit, damaging them further. The lightning is able to hit other fighters as well, however it will spawn a short distance away from the target making this a rare occurrence. Additionally, fighters who are hit by an enchanted trident will be momentarily bound in place until the lightning strikes them, guaranteeing the additional hit and sending them knocked away afterwards.
Up Special[]
Ender Pearl: Alex will take out an Ender Pearl and toss it in whatever direction the player is tilting the control stick. The Ender Pearl will fly in a straight line until it either hits something solid or travels half of Battlefield’s length. At that point the Ender Pearl will disappear and teleport Alex to its location. When Alex reaches her destination, she and any fighter who is right next to her will take a small amount of damage.
Down Special[]
Splash Potion: Alex will take out a Splash Potion of Harming and hurl it in front of her. The Splash Potion doesn’t travel a very far distance, but when the potion gets something it will break on impact and, as the name might suggest, splash. This causes a small aoe where any opponent in its range will be hurt by the potion’s effect. In this case, it causes a small amount of damage and some knockback. There is roughly a 10% that Alex will end up throwing a Splash Potion of Poison instead. Splash Potions of Poison end up doing a smaller amount of damage, but applying a Poison status to the fighters. Those fighters will then take extra damage every second for the next 8 seconds which adds up to more damage than a regular Splash Potion of Harming would have done.
Final Smash[]
End Portal: This Final Smash begins with an End Portal rising up out of the ground right in front of Alex. If nobody is in that spot at the time, this Final Smash is wasted. However, if anyone was there… they will fall into the End Portal and be transported to an alternate dimension known as “The End” as the Final Smash transitions into a cinematic. The character(s) will look around briefly in confusion wondering where they are before the Ender Dragon flies in with a roar and breathes its purple dragon fire down upon them dealing high damage and sending them flying with knockback once the cinematic ends and they are returned to the field of battle.
Extra Skill[]
Potion / Enchanting Table: Alex can do more than just make Enchantments when standing next to an Enchanting Table she can also brew Potions! When interacting with the Enchantment menu there will be a fourth option that lists the name of a Potion. If Alex selects the Potion (and has at least 5 Lapis Lazuli) she’ll be able to brew that Potion. Unlike the enchantments these Potions are not activated immediately and can be held onto until Alex is ready to use them which is done by pressing the Extra Skill input. Alex can hold onto a maximum of three potions at a time and if she has more than one potion when she tries to drink one she will drink the oldest potion she has. There are only three potions that Alex can brew and the one that appears in the Enchantment menu is randomized each time. All potion effects will only last for a few seconds after Alex drinks them so use them wisely. A list of Alex’s potions and their effects are as follows:
- Potion of Swiftness - After drinking a Potion of Swiftness, Alex’s movement speed will increase as well as the distance of any jumps that she makes.
- Potion of Invisibility - After drinking a Potion of Invisibility, Alex will vanish from view as if she had used a Cloaking Device item. A shimmer effect can be seen when Alex moves around too much so it’s not the most helpful in every situation.
- Potion of Slow Falling - After drinking a Potion of Slow Falling, Alex’s fall speed will be reduced allowing for increased control over her movements in the air. Not quite as good as Jigglypuff’s air control, but it’s an improvement at the very least.
The Extra Skill input is also how Alex can summon a new Enchanting Table to wherever her current position is. To do this, just hold down the Extra Skill for a second instead of just clicking the input which would normally cause her to drink a Potion. Doing this also causes Alex to consume a small amount of her resources in order to create the Enchanting Table and if she doesn’t have enough then no Enchanting Table will spawn.
Unique Traits[]
While Steve is all about mining for materials, crafting tools, and creating blocks, Alex represents more of the magical side of Minecraft.
Alex has a resource management mechanic, similar to Steve, that allows her to “mine” for materials along the stage and use them in her special moves. While can obtain six different materials through mining, Alex can only obtain four with those being Dirt, Wood, Stone, and Lapis Lazuli. Alex’s Dirt, Wood, and Stone are displayed in a meter next to her Damage %.
When Alex spawns in at the start of a match she will start out with 15 units of Dirt, 10 units of Wood, 5 units of Stone, and 5 units of Lapis Lazuli. While Alex can have a combined total of 50 Dirt, Wood, and Stone units in her inventory, she can have a maximum of 50 Lapis Lazuli as well. When Alex respawns after being KO’d she won’t lose any of her materials and will in fact replenish her Lapis Lazuli up to 5 if she was KO’d with less than 5 in her inventory. As Alex collects materials, her material bar will change to show a percentage of how much Dirt, Wood, and Stone she has collected and are displayed in that order left ro right. Any Lapis Lazuli that Alex has obtained will display to the right of this bar by showing a single piece of Lapis Lazuli and a number up above it displaying the exact amount that she has.
Alex is also capable of crawling along the stage. As a purely aesthetic touch, Alex is also capable of tilting her head up and down by just tilting the control stick in that direction when she is talking, jumping, or creating blocks.
When Kirby has copied Alex, he will have a limited version of this resource mechanic. Upon taking Alex’s abilities, Kirby will gain 5 units of Wood. Kirby cannot create Enchantments with an Enchanting Table and as such can only obtain Dirt, Wood, and Stone when mining. Kirby also has a more limited inventory compared to Alex and can only hold 20 units of materials. While Kirby can’t create his own enchantments, when he copies Alex’s abilities he will gain one Tier 1 Enchantment at random.
